While we use shipment factors to calculate shipment values, in the traditional sense, manufacturers' shipments measure the dollar value of products sold by manufacturing establishments and are based on net selling values, f.o.b. (free on board) plant, after discounts and allowances are excluded. Printers can use this information to keep tabs on competitors and the size of their markets as well as aid the industry in starting a conversation about the size of the printing shipment market as a whole.
