Abstract

The printing industry relies on the reflection densitometer as its most useful tool for quality control. Early studies of reflection densitometers pointed out that there was considerable disagreement between the instruments in the industry. A more recent study of new reflection densitometers indicated that inter-instrument agreement had improved but there was still room for additional improvement. That same study proved if a common check plaque of ink-on-paper was used, better inter-instrument agreement could be achieved. The Gravure Densitometer Committee in cooperation with RIT developed the GTA/RIT Reflection Density Reference for use with three standard gravure ink sets. Its use has helped to minimize variations between reflection densitometers.
