Abstract

Gravure engraving characteristics have been traditionally given in terms of screen size, cell depth and cell width. This approach is suitable for the evaluation of engravings produced by a particular etching or mechanical engraving method, but does not allow the direct comparisons of engravings produced by different methods. With the introduction of instruments measuring in terms of cell volume per area, a new measure for gravure engravings, the Equivalent Engraving Depth or EED is proposed EED is a measure of cell volume per area. The use of the Equivalent Engraving Depths for the prediction of printout density and the requirements of futuristic engraving methods are discussed in this paper.
