Abstract

In the industries generally automation and computer technology are today applied to increase the productivity of human work. The automated and manual production stages should be connected to effective, integrated wholes in the development of the production systems of the future. The integration should cover all the operations of the company, not only within the production process but also the relations to the customers and suppliers. How should this be performed in the graphic arts industry? This paper gives a review on the studies made for the definition of the CIM concept in printing enterprises. A number of models have been needed for that purpose. It has been necessary to model the operations of each enterprise and to define the nature of the relationship (functional, informational, control) between each operation. Different dimensions of views (functional, information, resource, organization) have been taken and the information and material flows have been charted.
