An Adaptation of the Proficorder for Paper Printability Studies.

The commercial Proficorder was modified to count holes or depressions in a paper's surface. This was done by using a cut-off (which was variable) to eliminate response from roughness of long wavelength and equipping the instrument with a counter that automatically counted holes at a set depth. Data taken of a cut-off of .030 inches and for holes at a depth of 50 micro-inches on eight papers gives a high correlation between the log of the counts per inch and the reflection density of prints made on the FOGRA Print Tester. It is proposed that the cut-off on the Proficorder is related to the cut-off of long wavelength irregularities obtained by printing on soft packings and also the cut-off-obtained on drawdowns by using a flexible blade on a soft support.
