Direct Addressing with Ink Jet Printers.

Present labeling operations involve the maintenance of a large name and address file, the printing of name and addresses from a file and the subsequent cutting and pasting of these labels on the items being mailed. This operation cost the publisher up to $10 per thousand labels. A non-contact printing process - the ink jet process - permits labels to be printed directly as mailing pieces from magnetic tape records. The process is fast enough, up to 700 feet per minute, to permit addresses to be added on the printing press as the original document is printed or on the bindery as the piece is assembled. In either case, the costly steps of printing an intermediate label and its cutting - pasting operation are eliminated.
