Abstract

A surface energetics approach has been taken to evaluate the wettability of dampener rolls and to provide direction for research in improving wettability. In this paper surface energy parameters derived from surface tension and fracture mechanics considerations are described, and their role in the lithographic process is reviewed. The application of these parameters as a measure of dampener roll wettability is examined through experimental determination of polar and dispersion energy contributions to surface tension for several different roll materials and coatings. Electron photomicrograph studies of these materials done in conjunction with the surface energy analysis are also discussed.
